  • French Roulette

What is Live Roulette?

Digitizing the experience of a casino would have been incomplete without including classics such as Poker, Sic Bo or Baccarat - which have existed for centuries.

Roulette is one such classic, conceived in 18th-century France and still nowadays, attracts veteran and newbie players alike.

It is an incredibly fun, thrilling game with a high probability of success for the players.

Live Roulette at an online casino is presented by a professional, often includes multiple players within the same session and is streamed in high-quality.

Single-player Roulette dealt by a bot is possible but could become boring.

Some examples attempt to incorporate a social aspect through a live chat or scoreboard, such as Gamdom's in-house Roulette game.

Live Roulette is perhaps the more interesting and exciting version of the game at an online casino.

What Are the Rules of the Game?

Whichever version of Live Roulette you are playing, the basic rules are always the same.

The game is actually very simple and straightforward.

What makes or breaks your success is luck and your ability to be strategic and make clever moves, keeping in mind all the game's rules and instructions.

Game Instructions:

  • Get chips from your dealer.

You decide the value of your chips, and this will then affect how much you win. If a bet is 2:1 for example, a winning move will award you with your original bet value, plus the same value another two times.

  • Make bets

Make your bet by placing your chips on the board. There are different types of bets you can make during this game. We will explain all of them in more detail later on.

Each bet has different winning odds for the player.

The dealer will clearly indicate the moment when no more bets should be placed. Placing a bet after this point may result in your disqualification from the game.

  • The wheel is spun

The window for players to place bets may be extended to this point. The dealer could decide to let players place bets for some time while the wheel is already spinning.

  • Results

Once the wheel stops spinning and the ball finds its place on it, the results are announced.

If the ball lands on the number, section or colour you bet, you win.

Payouts and losses and affected immediately. Your winnings depend on the odds of the bet you placed and the value you gave your chips.

Players may choose to stay at the same table or leave the game. A new round starts.

During your game, you will see a puck on the table which changes position each round. At the start of the new round, the puck will be placed on the previous winning number by the dealer.

A Closer Look at the Three Principal Types of Roulette

Your possibilities and moves during Roulette depend on which version of the game your play.

Let's discuss the most popular three modes of the game: American, European and French.

-'En Prison' is possible, minimizing losses'En Prison' is possible, minimizing losses

This table illustrates the major differences between the three games.

As you can see, French and European Roulette are very similar. These versions present the player with better odds of winning.

The major difference between French and European Roulette is the table.

On the French table, the majority of the table is in red with the wheel planted at the centre of the table rather than to the side. This means players betting on black in French Roulette have smaller chances of winning.

European and French Roulette are probably the safer versions of Roulette to play, also ideal to practice the game if you're a newbie. They progress at a slower pace in comparison to American Roulette, essentially saving you money.

As you can see, European and French Roulette allow players the opportunity to control how many losses they make. We will describe the moves: 'En Prison' and 'La Partage' in more detail later on.

Although American Roulette is riskier, it is as a consequence more exciting! Many players prefer this version for the thrill.

Bets and Payouts in Roulette

So what types of bets can you make in Roulette?

Firstly, there are two main categories of bets in Roulette: Inside Bets and Outside Bets.

The difference is that inside bets are placed on numbers and outside bets can be placed on colours or whether the result is going to be an odd or even number, for example.

Let's go through the various types of inside and outside bets in roulette.

Inside Bets

There are six types of Inside Bets. Not all of them can be played in all three versions of Roulette which we have discussed.

Let's take a look:

Straight Up

This means you are placing a bet on one or more individual numbers on the table. Place your chips on your selected numbers to secure your bet.

Placing a bet on more than one number means you have a bigger chance of winning however, remember that only one number is crowned the winner. All the other numbers which are not winning figures will result in great losses on your end.

The payout for this bet is 35:1, the biggest possibility of winnings in the game.

However, it is also the most difficult to win as you are betting on individual numbers and not a whole section, row, colour or group of numbers odd or even.

Split Bet

A split bet is a bet placed on two neighbouring numbers on the table. To secure your bet place your chip between the two numbers you select.

A winning bet would come with a payout of 17:1. A smaller payout however with a bigger chance of winning.

Street Bet

This bet could also be called a 'three number bet' or 'Trio'. As these aliases indicate, it's because you will be betting on three numbers using the same chip.

Place your chip at the end of the row of numbers you choose. A street bet is a bet placed on three adjacent numbers.

Placing a bet on three numbers on the board that are not adjacent to each other would be a straight up bet.

If you win your payout will be 11:1. As we're sure you've noticed, payouts get smaller the more numbers you are betting on at once. This is because the more numbers you bet on, the bigger your chances of winning.

Corner Bet

Also known as the 'square bet' or the 'four number bet'.

Place your chip at the corner meeting point between four adjacent numbers. Not a row or column of four numbers. The adjacent numbers must come together in a square, hence the bet's secondary name.

You'd be betting on four numbers at once, which means your payout has shrunk to 8:1 should you make a winning bet.

The Monster

This move, also known as 'the Beast' or 'the five number bet', is only possible in American Roulette.

The Monster only allows you to bet on the following numbers all at once: 0, 00, 1, 2, 3.

As for payout, a winning bet would receive 6:1 for this bet.

Sixline Bet

To place a bet on six numbers at once, place your chip at the meeting point of the two rows of numbers you want to bet on. These must be six adjacent numbers and not random numbers on your table.

This bet is also called 'the line bet' or the 'six number bet'.

Should you be a winner, you will receive a payout of 5:1.

Outside Bets

As for Outside Bets, you will have five options. All five of them are possible no matter which version of the game you will be playing.

Column Bet

Pick a column from your table and place your chip at the bottom of the column. By making this bet, you will be betting that one number from the selected column will win.

Note that 0 and 00 do not count as numbers you can bet on for this bet. So, you will only be able to place your bets on the numbers 1 to 36 in all versions of the game.

This bet is one with the smallest payouts of 2:1.

Dozens Bet

You will be placing a bet on twelve random numbers. If the ball lands on any of those twelve numbers on the wheel, you are a winner. The numbers do not need to be adjacent or consecutive.

You may make multiple dozen bets, up to three to be precise. Of course, this increases your chances, but it would be wise to make the bet only in the initial stages of your game.

The payout is at 2:1 for this bet too.

Odd or Even Bet

With only a 1:1 payout, this bet allows players to bet on either odd or even numbers. The numbers 0 and 00 do not count for this bet.

High or Low Bet

Placing a low bet means betting on numbers found in the section of numbers between 1 and 18. Betting a high bet means betting on numbers between 19 and 36.

Should the ball land on a 0 or 00 after the wheel spin, any player's high or low bets will be lost.

The payout for a winning HiLo bet is only 1:1.

Red or Black Bet

Here, instead of betting on a number or section of numbers, you will bet on the colour of the winning number.

In French Roulette, players betting on red will have higher chances as more sections of the French table are in red.

For this bet too, the payout is 1:1.

What about Special Moves?

Earlier we mentioned two special moves which are only possible in French and European Roulette.

Let us walk you through how they work.

En Prison

Calling 'Roulette en Prison' will allow you to put your bet on hold should the result of the spin of the wheel be a failure for you.

Let's say you place a red or black bet, betting on the colour red. The winning number is a black number, so your bet should be lost. But, 'en prison' will put your bet on hold till the next round.

If the result of the next spin is in fact a red number, you will earn your winnings. But if the result is black again, you lose.

This is a very beneficial possibility for the player. It is only allowed on high or low bets, black or red bets and odd or even bets.

La Partage

This rule will decrease the house edge in French and European Roulette from 2.7% to only 1.35%. This is definitely a good move for the player.

When applied, this rule will return the player half of their bet if the ball lands on 0.

Using the same example we used in the previous explanation if the result of the wheel spin is 0 when you bet red, you will get half your bet back. So if you bet $30, you get $15. If the ball lands on black, your bet is lost either way.

Before playing your game, confirm with the dealer that these moves are playable at your table and casino of choice.

Which is the Best Type of Roulette?

So now you've read our guide and have perhaps started practicing the game at an online casino. You might be wondering which of the three versions of Roulette is best.

It really depends on what you're looking for out of your game.

For a more profitable game, we would recommend European and French Roulette. As we mentioned earlier, these two games will progress at a slower rate than American Roulette, so first of all, there is less space for you to spend money.

As we have illustrated above, these two modes of Roulette also offer opportunities for the player to minimize their losses. Even when you lose your bet, you may get the opportunity for some cash back.

We would also recommend the European and French versions of the game to amateurs who are still learning. You would be learning a more universal version of the game, exploring all the possible moves except for 'the Monster bet' and all the while minimizing your chances for losses.

If you're after risk, thrill and a fast-paced game which will keep you on the edge, then American roulette is more for you.

Regardless of which version you prefer, the rules are standard with very few exceptions.

Make sure you know the rules well before playing, not only to win but also to avoid being disqualified for making a wrong move. Do not hesitate from clarifying certain rules with your dealer, such as whether special moves are permissible at your table.

Special Roulette Games

Before bringing our blog post to a close, we want to discuss a few different variations of the games you could come across at online casinos.

The rules of gameplay will remain the same however, these games may come with certain special features which affect how the game progresses and your chances at success.

Lightning Roulette

Lightning Roulette is a live roulette game brought by Evolution, a leading live casino game provider.

This game is an adaptation of Roulette for online casinos, which is very exciting and keeps the player engaged. It is streamed in high-quality and dealt by trained professionals.

Some of Lightning Roulette's special features include:

  • Multipliers of up to 500x

  • Lucky Numbers

  • Thrilling Lightning Bolts! which signify important moments of the game

Lightning Roulette has become one of the most popular versions of roulette online.

If you want to know more about this game specifically, we recommend you take a look at our Lightning Roulette Game Guide.

Speed Roulette

You will be able to find variations of Speed Roulette at many casinos including a few of our favorites such as:

  • Oshi Casino

  • Leo Vegas

  • Royal Panda

Speed Roulette games are made by many providers including two giants of the industry: Evolution and Pragmatic Live.

Here too, there are not many changes that were made to the way the game is played as opposed to the traditional version of Roulette. As the name implies, the one thing that does change is the speed of the game.

Speed Roulette is very fast-paced therefore stripping the game of its relaxed, laid-back vibes making it a lot more tense and electrifying.

Double Ball Roulette

At a few online casinos, you will find a variation of the game where two balls roll around the wheel.

Are you excited about a double chance at making winnings?

You will be allowed to place two bets, and if one of the balls lands on your selected number, you win. If both balls fall on a number you selected, you win twice.

But if neither ball falls on a number you bet on, then you lose twice.

The risk is doubled in this game - double the chance of winning, but just as much chance of losing both your bets.

Auto Roulette

You might also come across Auto Roulette games. For this version, we recommend three casinos in particular:

  • Axe Casino

  • Oshi Casino

  • N1 Casino

The latter has varied options of this game, including:

  • Scarab Auto Roulette

  • MultiFire Auto Roulette

  • Turbo Auto Roulette

Auto Roulette games are based on European Roulette. They are more fast-paced than a traditional roulette game however, as with all the variations we have discussed, follow the same rules.

These are only a few of the options which you will be able to play at online casinos when it comes to Roulette.

Online gambling maintains its standards by regularly updating games, and coming up with creative new gameplay to keep things riveting and refreshing for audiences.

A few other types of Roulette games you may find are:

  • Immersive Roulette

  • Instant Roulette

  • Multi Wheel Roulette

We hope you enjoyed our tips about Roulette, one of the most beloved casino games to date.
