Card values 

• Card values range from 2 to 9, depending on their face value. 

• Face cards (Jacks, Queens, and Kings) have a value of 0. 

• Ace, a separate card, is worth 1.

How does card counting work in baccarat? 

As mentioned in the previous section, each card has a specific value. The value of a hand is calculated by adding up the values of the cards dealt.  

In baccarat, there are no tens, so when the count rises above 9, the ten is removed to obtain a single number. 

Let's move on to an example to make things clearer: If the value of each card in a hand reaches a 7 and an 8, we add these two cards together and get a score of 15. Since we're over 9, we need to remove the ten to get the new hand score, which is 5.

How does a baccarat game work? 

Baccarat isn't like any other casino game: you don't play against the dealer. Weird, isn't it? 

• First of all, you must place your bet on one of these three positions: The player's hand, the banker's hand, or the tie. 

• After your bet has been accepted by the dealer, he deals two cards to the player and the bank. 

• After adding up the two cards, they give a value to each hand. 

• The hand closest to 9 wins the game. 

Drawing the third card 

Here's the subtlety that adds a little spice to the game: 

In some cases, depending on the score obtained, the dealer will draw an additional card. 

Third card for the player 

If the player's score is below 6, the dealer draws an additional card. This third card must then be added to the two cards making up the player's starting hand, giving the player a new hand score.  

Of course, the ten-card rule still applies: If the score contains a ten, this must be removed to obtain the final hand value. 

Third card for the bank 

Drawing a third card for the bank is a little more subtle. Here are case-by-case situations in which the bank will or will not receive a third card: 

• The bank will receive a third card if its score is 0, 1, or 2. 

• The bank will not receive a third card if its score is greater than or equal to 7.

• If the bank's score is between 3 and 6, a third card will be dealt according to the value of the third card dealt to the player (if a third draw has been dealt to the player). 

Baccarat: Payout rates and payout ratios 

Depending on the risk you take when betting on baccarat, you will, of course, be paid according to that risk.  

Keep in mind that there's also the casino's commission on the game to take into account. So, depending on your bet, there are three possible outcomes: 

• If you bet on the player's hand and win, you get back one times your stake. If you bet $10, you walk away with $20. 

• If you bet on the banker's hand and win, you win one times your bet minus 5%. If you bet $10, you walk away with $19.50. 

• If you bet on a tie and win, you win eight times your bet. If you bet $10, you walk away with $90.
